Mini-Open Repairs: When Smaller is Better
    A Kölbel with Elbows
To keep pace with evolving surgical techniques, designs of even the most traditional devices must be reviewed and "tweaked" as necessary.

The Kölbel Delto-Pectoral Retractor has become the instrument centerpiece of many shoulder repair sets. Its lightweight frame, ball-snap blade interchange system and convenient one-handed operation make it an instrument of enduring value, and easy to like. However, the growing popularity of small incision cuff repairs suggested a need for retractors tailored to Mini-Open procedures. While based upon the original Kölbel design, the new frame is shorter, lighter and incorporates hinged arms just proximal to the blade attachments. Judicious relocation of the center screw allows distraction nearly equal to that of the regular Kölbel frame.

Hospitals and surgery centers seeking a simple, yet effective device for small incision procedures should find this frame especially well suited to their needs. We offer this new retractor alone, or bundled in either two- or six-blade combinations. Owners of Kölbel and Buxton retractor systems will also be pleased to note that their existing blades dating back to 80’s readily snap into this new frame. Buxton's Mini-Open Retractor is the third frame option in its growing modular system for shoulder surgery. Surgeons newly acquiring a retractor system may also want to also consider two other frames. The original Kölbel frame remains the most requested style while the rack-and-pinion Buxton frame is often the frame of choice for high demand procedures such as joint replacements and complex rotator cuff repairs.
