While newer humeral head retractors have muscled their way into shoulder sets, the simple elegance of Dr. Carter Rowe’s design enjoys lasting popularity.

Unlike some of the heftier alternatives, the slim blade of the Carter Rowe humeral head retractor slips readily into narrow joint spaces so its falciform surfaces can rest gently between the glenoid and humeral head. Two widely spaced digitiform extensions reach out beyond the cup to wend their way around the posterior rim and help distribute force to the glenoid neck once lateral distraction has begun.

Faithful fans of this instrument will be particularly pleased to discover that Buxton now offers it in two versions. The original model is short, swift and maneuverable, while the newer model offers the added benefit of an extended midsection. With this tactfully placed extension, overly helpful hands can be subtly encouraged to remain a respectful distance from the operating area.
