Does "Minimalism" conjure up images of stark, geometric forms, the quintessence of the postmodern art movement? Or does it bring to mind a tiny incision in the deltoid, the hallmark of the postmodern surgical procedure, the Mini-Open? Attention active contributors to the surgical arts: Buxton’s newest instrument installation to further this form of minimally invasive expression is known as the “Minimal Blade”.

Why a Minimal Blade?
Original Kölbel blades were designed with elongated distal curves, giving them a distinctive "C"-shaped profile. This feature serves well for exposing and supporting the retracted soft tissue, but an exaggerated lip can be cumbersome and require a larger incision than necessary. However, the distal curve of Buxton's Minimal (or "Mini") blades is considerably subdued, with only about 5mm deflection from the straight. With shallower lips, blades can be easily inserted into the wound site while mounted on the frame. A low profile design and narrow 20 mm width make these blades our Magnum Opus of Mini-Opens. As with their predecessors, this latest work of art is available in three depths and fits Buxton's eclectic collection of frames developed for shoulder surgery. They are especially well suited for the short frames, like the new 24-6362, specifically designed for Mini-Open repairs.
